How to Become a Microsoft Azure Architect

Microsoft Azure Architect career path — How to Become a Microsoft Azure Architect | photo by cottonbro studio via Pexels

The Microsoft Azure Architect role is one of the most sought-after positions in cloud infrastructure today. Organizations moving workloads to Azure need professionals who understand how to design systems that are secure, scalable, and cost-effective. Getting to that role requires a clear path — the right certifications, the right experience, and a structured approach to building your skills.

This guide walks you through what the Azure Architect role involves, what certifications you need, and how to build the experience that makes you competitive for it in Canada.

What Does a Microsoft Azure Architect Do?

An Azure Architect is responsible for designing cloud solutions on the Microsoft Azure platform. The work spans several disciplines. You need to understand networking, security, storage, compute, identity management, and governance — and you need to know how those components interact at scale.

In practice, that means working with development teams, operations teams, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into architecture decisions. You recommend which Azure services to use, how to structure them, and how to manage them over time. You also need to understand hybrid environments, because most Canadian enterprises run a mix of on-premises and cloud infrastructure.

The role is senior by nature. Most Azure Architects have several years of hands-on experience before stepping into the position. If you are currently in a systems administrator, cloud engineer, or IT infrastructure role, you are likely already building the foundation.

The Microsoft Azure Architect Certification Track

Microsoft has a defined certification path for architects. It runs through three levels: foundational, associate, and expert.

AZ-900: Azure Fundamentals

If you are early in your cloud journey, AZ-900 is the starting point. It validates your understanding of core Azure concepts, services, pricing, and the shared responsibility model. It is not required before moving to associate-level certifications, but it gives you a grounding that makes the subsequent exams easier. You can review the AZ-900 certification details on Microsoft Learn.

AZ-104: Microsoft Azure Administrator

The Azure Administrator certification is the natural associate-level step before pursuing the architect track. It covers managing Azure subscriptions, configuring virtual networks, implementing storage, deploying virtual machines, and managing identities with Azure Active Directory. Most candidates who go on to the AZ-305 architect exam hold AZ-104 first. The hands-on experience it requires also maps closely to what the architect exam tests.

AZ-305: Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions

This is the architect-level certification. It is one of Microsoft’s expert-tier credentials, and it tests your ability to design solutions across identity, compute, storage, networking, and monitoring. The exam is scenario-based. Microsoft does not ask you to recall definitions — it asks you to recommend approaches for realistic architectural problems.

To sit the AZ-305, Microsoft recommends that candidates hold AZ-104 and have at least one year of experience designing Azure solutions. That experience requirement matters. The exam tests judgment as much as knowledge, and judgment comes from working through real problems, not just studying materials.

You can review the full AZ-305 certification outline on Microsoft Learn.

If you are ready to start on the certification track, Microsoft certification training at Ultimate IT Courses covers AZ-900 through to AZ-305 in instructor-led format with small class sizes.

Experience That Prepares You for the Role

Certifications validate your knowledge. Experience builds the judgment the role requires. If you want to move into an Azure Architect position, there are specific types of experience that matter most.

Cloud migration projects give you direct exposure to the decisions architects make. If you can get involved in a migration at your current organization — even in a supporting role — that experience pays off during the AZ-305 exam and in interviews.

Hybrid infrastructure work matters too. Most Canadian enterprises run Azure alongside on-premises Active Directory, physical servers, and legacy applications. Experience managing that hybrid environment is directly relevant to what architects handle day to day.

Security and governance are often underestimated. Understanding Azure Policy, role-based access control, Azure Security Center, and compliance frameworks gives you a significant advantage. Many candidates who struggle with AZ-305 scenarios do so because they have not invested enough in security and governance thinking, not infrastructure design.

Networking is foundational. Virtual networks, subnets, peering, VPN gateways, and Azure ExpressRoute appear in almost every architecture. If you have a networking background, this is a real advantage. If you do not, invest time in it before tackling AZ-305.

According to the Government of Canada Job Bank, demand for cloud infrastructure professionals continues to grow across the country, with public sector and enterprise organizations accelerating cloud adoption.

What the Azure Architect Role Pays and Where It Leads

Azure Architects are typically compensated at the senior end of IT salary ranges. Roles in Canada advertised under titles like Cloud Architect, Azure Solutions Architect, and Cloud Infrastructure Architect frequently list competitive compensation — and in many cases, the AZ-305 certification appears directly in the job requirements.

The role also opens further paths. Many Azure Architects move into cloud strategy, enterprise architecture, or technical leadership roles. Some specialize in particular domains — cloud security, DevOps, or hybrid infrastructure — and use the architect credential as a foundation for more focused work.

How to Structure Your Preparation

A realistic preparation plan for someone currently in IT administration or cloud engineering looks like this. Start by assessing where you are against the AZ-104 exam objectives. If you are already working in Azure, you likely have coverage across most domains — but there will be gaps worth addressing. Study and schedule AZ-104 first if you do not already hold it.

Once you have AZ-104, shift your focus to AZ-305. Microsoft provides official study materials, and the exam guide lists every domain and topic area you need to prepare. Plan for 6–12 weeks of focused preparation depending on your current experience level.

Hands-on practice matters more than passive review. Use Azure sandbox environments to work through architecture scenarios. Build networks, configure governance policies, and test designs rather than just reading about them.
