AWS DevOps Certifications Explained

AWS DevOps certifications — AWS DevOps Certifications Explained | photo by Kevin Ku via Pexels

DevOps has changed how software teams work in the cloud. If you work in cloud infrastructure, automation, or systems operations, AWS DevOps certifications give you a recognized credential that proves you can build, deploy, and maintain applications at scale on AWS.

This guide explains the AWS DevOps certification path, what each credential covers, who each one is for, and how to approach them in the right order.

What AWS DevOps Certifications Cover

AWS DevOps certifications focus on the skills cloud professionals use to automate software delivery pipelines, manage infrastructure as code, and maintain high-availability systems on Amazon Web Services.

The core domains include continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, infrastructure as code using AWS CloudFormation and the AWS CDK, monitoring and observability on AWS, deployment strategies including blue/green and canary deployments, incident and event management, and security and compliance automation.

These are practical skills used in day-to-day cloud operations roles. AWS DevOps certifications validate that you understand how to apply them in real environments — not just in theory.

The AWS DevOps Certification Path

AWS structures its certifications in three tiers: Foundational, Associate, and Professional. For DevOps specifically, the relevant credentials sit at the Associate and Professional levels.

Start With AWS Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03). Before pursuing a DevOps-specific AWS certification, you need strong foundational cloud knowledge. The AWS Solutions Architect Associate is the standard starting point. This exam covers core AWS services — compute, storage, networking, and databases — along with architectural best practices. You do not need it before sitting the DevOps Professional exam, but the architectural knowledge it builds makes the DevOps content significantly easier to absorb.

If you have not yet earned a foundational AWS credential, start here. You can explore AWS certification training at ultimateitcourses.ca/courses/amazon/.

AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional (DOP-C02)

This is the primary AWS DevOps certification. It sits at the Professional level and targets experienced cloud professionals who design and implement DevOps workflows on AWS.

The exam is organized around six domains. SDLC Automation (22%) covers building CI/CD pipelines using AWS CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy, and CodeCommit. Configuration Management and Infrastructure as Code (17%) covers AWS CloudFormation, the AWS CDK, and AWS OpsWorks. Resilient Cloud Solutions (15%) tests knowledge of high availability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery patterns. Monitoring and Logging (15%) covers Amazon CloudWatch, AWS Config, AWS CloudTrail, and AWS X-Ray. Incident and Event Response (14%) tests your ability to detect and remediate operational incidents. Security and Compliance (17%) covers IAM policies, AWS Secrets Manager, and automated compliance frameworks.

The DOP-C02 exam is 75 questions with a 180-minute time limit. The passing score is 750 out of 1000. AWS recommends at least two years of experience provisioning, operating, and managing AWS environments before sitting this exam.

AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate (SOA-C02)

For professionals who want to deepen their operations expertise before tackling the Professional level, the SysOps Administrator Associate is a strong intermediate credential. This exam focuses on managing and operating AWS systems in production — monitoring, deployment, security, and cost optimization.

Some professionals pursue SysOps Administrator first and then move to DevOps Professional. Others go directly to DevOps Professional after Solutions Architect Associate. The right path depends on how hands-on your current role is.

For a broader view of cloud training options, see ultimateitcourses.ca/courses/amazon/ for AWS-specific programs, and ultimateitcourses.ca/courses/networking/ for network infrastructure training that supports cloud operations roles.

Who Should Pursue AWS DevOps Certifications

AWS DevOps certifications are most relevant for cloud engineers who manage infrastructure provisioning and deployment pipelines on AWS, DevOps engineers moving from on-premises environments to cloud-based delivery, systems administrators transitioning to cloud operations roles, and senior IT professionals who want to formalize hands-on AWS knowledge with a recognized credential.

If you spend your day writing CloudFormation templates or managing CodePipeline builds, this certification validates what you already do.

How to Prepare for the AWS DevOps Engineer Professional

The DOP-C02 is a demanding exam. It tests applied knowledge, not recall. Scenario-based questions require you to select the right AWS service or architecture pattern for a given operational problem.

The most effective preparation combines instructor-led training with hands-on lab work. Instructor-led training gives you structured coverage of the exam domains and helps you close knowledge gaps efficiently. Self-study alone often leaves blind spots, particularly in areas like infrastructure as code and CI/CD pipeline architecture where practical experience matters.

Hands-on labs give you the confidence to answer scenario questions accurately. AWS offers a free tier that lets you build practice environments. You should be able to deploy a working CI/CD pipeline using AWS CodePipeline and CodeDeploy before sitting the exam.

According to the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional exam guide, AWS recommends two or more years of experience with AWS services and DevOps practices. The AWS Well-Architected Framework is also required reading — the exam draws heavily on its principles around operational excellence, reliability, and security.

Your Next Step

If you work in cloud infrastructure and want a credential that reflects the complexity of modern DevOps work on AWS, the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional is the right target.
