How to Move From Sysadmin to Cloud Architect

If you searched for how to move from sysadmin to cloud architect, you already do half the job. You manage servers, patch systems, and keep infrastructure running. What separates you from the architect title is not technical knowledge. It is proof you design systems before they exist, instead of only maintaining systems someone else designed.

Ultimate IT Courses runs instructor-led AWS and Azure certification training built for working IT professionals. Book a training consultation to map out your path from sysadmin to architect.

What Separates a Sysadmin From a Cloud Architect

A systems administrator keeps existing infrastructure stable. You respond to tickets, apply patches, and manage access. A cloud architect designs the infrastructure before a single server spins up. Architects weigh cost, security, scalability, and business requirements against each other, then hand engineers a plan to build from.

The technical knowledge overlaps heavily between the two roles. The difference sits in scope and timing. Sysadmins solve problems as they appear. Architects prevent problems by designing around them ahead of time.

Skills to Build Before You Make the Move

Three skill areas separate ready candidates from hopeful ones.

Networking and security design come first. You need to design VPCs, subnets, identity policies, and encryption strategies, rather than configure them from a template someone else wrote.

Cost and capacity planning come second. Architects justify spending to finance and leadership. Practice modeling workload costs across compute, storage, and data transfer before a project starts, not after the bill arrives.

Infrastructure as code closes the list. Manual configuration does not scale to architecture-level work. Tools such as Terraform and AWS CloudFormation let you version and repeat your designs instead of rebuilding them by hand each time.

Choose a Certification Path

Two paths dominate this transition, and both build on ground sysadmins already stand on.

The AWS path starts with the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate exam, exam code SAA-C03, which tests your ability to design secure, resilient, and cost-optimized systems on AWS. From there, the Solutions Architect Professional exam adds multi-account and hybrid architecture depth.

The Azure path requires the Azure Administrator Associate certification (AZ-104) first, then the Azure Solutions Architect Expert exam, exam code AZ-305, which covers identity, governance, data storage, business continuity, and infrastructure design.

Pick the platform your organization already runs. Certifying on a platform you use daily gives you real scenarios to practice design decisions on, not hypothetical ones.

Get Design Experience Before You Have the Title

Certifications open the door. Design experience gets you through it.

Ask your manager to let you own the architecture for one project, even a small one. Document your reasoning: why this instance size, why this network layout, why this backup strategy. Present it for review the way an architect would, not the way a sysadmin quietly rolls out a change.

Volunteer to review other engineers’ designs too. Spotting gaps in someone else’s plan builds the judgment architects rely on daily.

What the Move Is Worth

Demand for cloud architecture skills in Canada stays steady. According to the Government of Canada Job Bank, the median wage for cloud architects nationally sits well above typical systems administrator pay, with demand tied closely to how fast organizations shift workloads to the cloud.

The transition rewards patience over speed. Sysadmins who spend six months to a year building design skills and earning one credential move into architecture roles with real leverage, not a new job title alone.
