Security Assessment and Authorization Training for Government IT Security Professionals

Security assessment and authorization training prepares you to decide whether a government system is safe to run. You learn to test controls, document risk, and recommend an authorization decision with evidence. This guide explains what the work involves, which skills matter, and how to build them as a government or defence professional in Canada.

Ready to plan your path? View government-ready certification tracks and match your next course to your role.

What Security Assessment and Authorization Means

Every federal system needs approval before it handles real data. Security assessment and authorization, often called SA&A, is the process behind this approval. A security assessor tests the controls. An authorizing official reads the results and accepts or rejects the remaining risk.

Canadian departments follow the IT security risk management lifecycle in ITSG-33 from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. The guidance sets out how you select controls, assess them, and monitor them over time. Many teams also study the NIST Risk Management Framework in SP 800-37, because its steps map closely to the same lifecycle.

Who Does This Work

Several roles touch SA&A in a department or a defence contractor:

  • Security assessors who test controls and write findings
  • System owners who prepare evidence and fix gaps
  • Departmental security staff who track risk and advise the authorizing official

Most people start in system administration, networking, or security operations. You already know how systems work. SA&A training teaches you how to prove they are protected.

Skills You Build in Training

Good training moves you from theory to evidence. You practise the tasks you will face on the job.

You learn to read a system architecture and spot where data enters, moves, and rests. You map a security profile, such as Protected B, to a set of required controls. You then write test plans showing how you will check each control.

Next comes the evidence. You gather configuration files, scan results, and interview notes. You compare them to the control statement and record a clear finding. A weak finding says “access control needs work.” A strong finding names the system, the control, the gap, and the fix.

Technical Skills Behind the Paperwork

SA&A is not only documents. You need technical depth to judge what you see.

Vulnerability scanning shows you missing patches and weak settings. Network knowledge helps you check segmentation and firewall rules. Identity and access skills help you review accounts and privileges. Logging skills help you confirm the system records the events your department requires.

Hands-on labs matter here. You learn faster when you scan a real lab network, read the output, and write the finding yourself.

Certifications That Support This Path

No single credential covers every part of SA&A. Most professionals combine a few.

CompTIA Security+ builds the baseline. CompTIA CySA+ adds analysis and scanning skills. CISSP and CAP-style risk management content cover governance and authorization. Mile2 courses add vendor-neutral, hands-on security labs. Our CompTIA training courses and cybersecurity tracks let you stack these in a logical order.

Choose based on your current role. If you administer systems today, start with scanning and analysis. If you already write policy, move toward risk management and governance.

Plan Your Training Around Clearance and Role

Some roles need a security clearance before you touch certain systems. Training does not replace clearance, and no course promises a job. It does give you the skills a hiring team looks for when they review your file.

Map your goal first. Do you want to assess systems, own them, or advise on risk? Each path asks for a different mix of technical and governance skills. A short consultation helps you avoid courses outside your needs.

Train a Whole Security Team

Departments and contractors often prepare several people for the same authorization effort. Team training keeps everyone on the same terms, templates, and test methods. Your assessors and system owners then speak one language, and reviews move faster.

Small classes also help. You ask questions about your own environment, and the instructor answers in context.

Next Steps

Ultimate IT Courses delivers instructor-led cybersecurity training in virtual and in-person formats, with small groups and hands-on labs. Review the cybersecurity training page to compare tracks. When you are ready, contact our team to build a plan for you or your department.
