Network Administration Certifications for IT Professionals

If you manage networks for a living — or you want to — certifications tell employers how much you know and what you are ready to take on. Network administration covers a wide range of skills: routing, switching, IP addressing, VLANs, wireless, and increasingly, cloud-connected infrastructure. The right certifications map directly to those skills and open doors to better roles.

This guide covers the main certifications available to network administrators in Canada, what each one covers, and how to choose the right path based on where you are right now.

Why Certifications Matter for Network Administrators

Certifications are not about collecting credentials. They are about proving, to a third party, that you have specific technical skills. Networking roles vary widely between organizations, so a certification gives hiring managers a consistent way to evaluate candidates.

In Canada, the Government of Canada Job Bank identifies network administration as a consistently in-demand occupation, with roles listed across financial services, telecommunications, healthcare, and the public sector. Employers in regulated industries often require recognized credentials as part of their hiring criteria.

If you are already working in networking, certifications give you a structure for advancing. If you are new to the field, they give you a starting point with credentials that employers recognize.

The Core Certifications for Network Administrators

CompTIA Network+ is the most widely recognized entry-level networking certification. It covers networking fundamentals: IP addressing, subnetting, routing protocols, switching, wireless standards, and basic network troubleshooting. Network+ is vendor-neutral — you learn concepts that apply across Cisco, Juniper, and other platforms. This makes it a strong starting point before committing to a vendor-specific track.

The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) is the standard certification for network administrators working in enterprise environments. It goes deeper than Network+ on routing and switching, covering OSPF, NAT, ACLs, VLANs, and WAN technologies. It also includes an introduction to security, automation, and wireless. Cisco equipment is deployed across most enterprise and government networks in Canada. If you work in or want to work in an organization using Cisco infrastructure, the CCNA is close to essential.

Once you have the CCNA and two or three years of hands-on experience, the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Enterprise is the next logical step. It covers advanced enterprise networking — SD-WAN, network assurance, dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 environments, and infrastructure automation. It positions you for senior network administrator and network engineer roles.

Microsoft and Cloud Networking Certifications

More organizations are running hybrid or cloud-first network architectures. Microsoft’s AZ-104 (Azure Administrator) and AZ-700 (Azure Network Engineer Associate) certifications are increasingly relevant for network administrators managing cloud connectivity alongside on-premises infrastructure.

If your organization uses Microsoft Azure, adding cloud networking credentials to your profile keeps your skills current with how enterprise networks are evolving. View Microsoft training at Ultimate IT Courses to find relevant courses.

Which Certification Should You Do First?

Your starting point depends on your current experience. If you have no formal networking training, start with CompTIA Network+. It gives you the vocabulary and foundational concepts needed before moving into vendor-specific study.

If you already work in IT — help desk, systems administration, or a junior networking role — go directly to the CCNA. The time you spend on Network+ first may not add enough value if you already have hands-on experience with networking concepts.

If you want to move into cloud-connected networking, consider pairing your CCNA with Azure fundamentals (AZ-900) before pursuing AZ-700. Understanding cloud networking architecture changes how you think about on-premises design as well.

What Employers in Canada Look For

Employers want certifications alongside practical experience. A CCNA with two years of hands-on work in a network role is far more compelling than the certification alone.

For networking roles specifically, employers look for demonstrated experience with routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, and EIGRP, troubleshooting skills with real network environments, and familiarity with network monitoring tools. The Cisco CCNA 200-301 certification page outlines the full exam scope and skills measured.

Network security skills are also increasingly expected in network administration roles — not only in dedicated security positions. Your certification path benefits from including foundational security knowledge such as CompTIA Security+ alongside your networking credentials.

How to Build Your Certification Plan

Start with the role you want in two years, not the job you have today. Then work backward.

A network administrator role in a mid-sized Canadian organization typically asks for CCNA or equivalent, one to three years of experience, and some familiarity with cloud or security tools. A senior network engineer or infrastructure lead role adds CCNP or Microsoft Azure Network Engineer, deeper scripting or automation skills, and project delivery experience.

Set a realistic timeline. The CCNA requires four to six months of focused study for most candidates. The CCNP adds another four to eight months per exam. Instructor-led training compresses that timeline by giving you structured content and lab access you would otherwise have to build yourself.

Get a Training Plan That Matches Your Goals

The certifications above give you a clear direction. The specifics depend on your current role, your employer’s infrastructure, and where you want to be in your career.

Contact Ultimate IT Courses to get a personalized certification roadmap. A training advisor will look at your background and help you identify the most direct path to the role you are aiming for.
