Azure Networking Fundamentals for Administrators

Managing Azure infrastructure means managing a network. Virtual machines, web applications, databases, and storage accounts all run on a network stack you configure, secure, and monitor. If you work in IT administration today, Azure networking is a core skill — not an optional add-on.

This guide covers the core Azure networking services every administrator needs, the certifications validating those skills, and how to start building this knowledge in a structured way.

What Azure Networking Covers

Azure networking is a set of services and configurations controlling how resources inside your environment communicate — with each other, with your on-premises systems, and with the internet.

The four services you work with most often are Virtual Networks, Network Security Groups, load balancers, and VPN Gateway. Each one plays a specific role in how traffic moves through your cloud environment.

Virtual Networks (VNets) are the foundation. Every resource you deploy in Azure lives inside a VNet. You define the IP address space, divide it into subnets, and control how subnets connect. Every network design decision you make traces back to your VNet configuration.

Network Security Groups (NSGs) act as your traffic filters. You write rules controlling what flows in and out of your resources. NSGs sit at the subnet or network interface level, and administrators configure them to allow or deny traffic based on port, protocol, and IP range.

Load Balancers, VPN Gateway, and DNS

Once your VNet is in place, three more services come into scope for most administrators.

Azure Load Balancer distributes traffic across multiple virtual machines. You configure it to keep your applications available even when individual machines go offline. For web-facing workloads, Application Gateway adds layer-7 routing and Web Application Firewall capabilities on top of basic load balancing.

VPN Gateway connects your on-premises network to your Azure VNet over an encrypted tunnel. Most organizations running hybrid environments — where some workloads stay on-premises and some run in Azure — use VPN Gateway or ExpressRoute to tie the two sides together. ExpressRoute provides a private connection bypassing the public internet entirely.

Azure DNS manages domain name resolution for your resources. You create DNS zones, configure records, and control name resolution for services inside your VNet and for public-facing endpoints.

How Azure Networking Differs From On-Premises

If your background is in on-premises networking with physical switches, routers, and firewalls, the concepts translate — but the tools look different.

In Azure, there is no physical hardware to rack and cable. Everything is software-defined. You create VNets, configure NSGs, and deploy load balancers through the Azure portal, Azure CLI, or ARM templates. Infrastructure becomes a configuration file you version-control and repeat across environments.

The other shift is the shared responsibility model. Microsoft manages the physical infrastructure. You manage the network configuration sitting on top of it. Knowing where your responsibility starts and where Microsoft’s ends is part of operating Azure networks securely.

Azure Networking Certifications for Administrators

For administrators moving into or deepening their Azure skills, the AZ-104 Microsoft Azure Administrator certification is the clearest benchmark. AZ-104 covers virtual networking directly — VNets, NSGs, peering, load balancers, and VPN Gateway are all part of the exam.

According to the Microsoft AZ-104 certification page, the exam targets IT professionals who implement, manage, and monitor Azure environments. Network administration is a major domain in the skills measured.

For administrators who want to specialize in networking, AZ-700 Designing and Implementing Microsoft Azure Networking Solutions goes deeper. It covers network topology design, private endpoints, Azure Firewall, and complex hybrid connectivity scenarios. AZ-700 is a natural follow-on after AZ-104.

How Administrators Build Azure Networking Skills

The most effective way to learn Azure networking is through hands-on practice in a live environment.

Azure offers a free account with credits for new users. Use it to build a VNet from scratch, create subnets, configure an NSG, and deploy a virtual machine inside your network. Test your NSG rules. Connect two VNets with VNet peering. Walking through these steps in a real environment builds the understanding no documentation alone provides.

Structured training accelerates your progress. An instructor-led course on Azure administration gets you past the conceptual gaps faster than self-study and gives you a clear point of contact when configuration problems appear.

The Government of Canada Job Bank shows strong and steady demand for IT administrators with cloud skills across Canada. Organizations in finance, healthcare, government, and technology sectors all run Azure environments and need administrators who understand how those networks are built and secured.
