What Is Red Hat Ansible and Why IT Teams Use It

Red Hat Ansible turns a stack of manual server configuration tasks into a single repeatable playbook, and Red Hat built an entire automation certification track around teaching IT professionals how to write one correctly. If you provision servers, patch systems, or deploy applications by hand across a growing fleet, Red Hat Ansible removes the repetition and gives your whole team a configuration file everyone reviews before running.

Explore advanced certification programs built around the automation skills employers list today.

What Ansible Automates

Ansible manages configuration management, application deployment, and orchestration across servers, network devices, and cloud infrastructure. Instead of logging into each machine separately, you write a playbook in YAML describing the end state you want, then Ansible applies it across every host on your list. A playbook written for ten servers runs the same way against a thousand.

Agentless by Design

Ansible connects over standard SSH and does not require an agent installed on every managed node, unlike some competing automation tools. This lowers the barrier to entry for teams new to automation, since existing access and credentials work without a separate agent rollout. Python handles the work on the managed side, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux ships with the dependencies already in place.

Open Source Engine vs. Enterprise Platform

Ansible itself is a free, open source automation engine maintained by the Ansible Collaborative. Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform is the paid enterprise product built around it, adding an automation controller for scheduling and access control, execution environments for consistent runtime dependencies, and automation hub for sharing certified content across teams. Most administrators learn the open source engine first, then move to the platform once their organization scales automation past a handful of scripts.

Red Hat expanded the platform through 2026 to support event-driven automation and AI-assisted operations, positioning Ansible as the execution layer connecting monitoring alerts to automated remediation instead of a ticket sitting in a queue overnight.

The Certification Path

Red Hat requires the RHCSA credential (EX200) before you sit the RHCE exam (EX294), and EX294 is the Ansible-focused exam in the Red Hat certification track. You build playbooks during the exam, and Red Hat grades them by running your work against freshly installed systems and checking the result, not by asking multiple-choice questions about syntax.

Past RHCE, the Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible path continues into specialist-level exams such as EX374, which cover developing reusable automation content and enterprise-scale workflows on Ansible Automation Platform. Red Hat restructured its full certification program in May 2026 into five specialization tracks, including a dedicated Ansible track with five progressive levels, so confirm which exam version and track structure applies before you register.

Who Should Learn It

Ansible skills fit systems administrators managing Linux fleets, network engineers automating device configuration, and DevOps engineers building deployment pipelines. If your day already includes repetitive configuration work across more than a handful of machines, the time you spend learning playbook syntax pays back within your first few automated tasks.

Government of Canada Job Bank data shows a favourable outlook for information systems specialists as organizations continue modernizing infrastructure through automation and cloud adoption, and automation experience increasingly shows up as a listed requirement rather than a nice-to-have across systems administration postings.

Build the Skill Set Employers List

Ultimate IT Courses runs instructor-led Red Hat training covering RHCSA, RHCE, and Ansible automation with hands-on labs instead of slide decks. Small group and corporate team formats fit if you are upskilling alongside other administrators on your team.
