How to Finish Your IT Certification Goals Before End of Year

Fourteen weeks remain in 2026. If you set a goal to earn an IT certification this year, the calendar now decides whether you finish or push the goal into 2027. This guide shows you how to finish your IT certification before end of year with a firm exam date, a backward-planned schedule, and study methods backed by research.

Not sure which exam fits the time you have left? Book a training path consultation and get a plan matched to your starting point.

Start With the Exam Date, Not the Study Plan

Book your exam first. A date on the calendar turns a vague goal into a deadline. Aim for the first or second week of December. This leaves room for a retake before the holiday break, when test centre slots thin out and your own schedule fills with family plans.

If you bought an exam voucher earlier this year, check its expiry today. CompTIA vouchers expire 12 months from purchase, retakes included, and the expiry date does not extend. A voucher bought last winter might run out before you sit the exam.

Work Backward From Test Day

Count the weeks between today and your exam date. For an early December exam, you have about ten weeks. Split them into three phases:

  • Weeks 1 to 6: cover every exam objective once, domain by domain.
  • Weeks 7 to 8: practice exams, weak-domain review, and hands-on labs.
  • Final two weeks: timed full-length practice tests and light review only.

Download the official exam objectives before you start. Every study session should map to a line on the objectives list. If a topic does not appear there, skip it for now.

Pick the Right Certification for the Time Left

Ten weeks suits an entry-level exam with steady study of six to eight hours per week. CompTIA A+ requires two exams, Core 1 and Core 2. Plan for both, or target Core 1 this year and Core 2 in January. Microsoft AZ-900 and other fundamentals exams fit inside the window with room to spare.

If you started CompTIA Security+ with no IT background, a December target gets tight. Be honest about your starting point. A realistic goal you finish beats an ambitious goal you abandon in November. Compare entry-level options on the CompTIA training page and the Microsoft training page.

Study the Way Research Says Works

Rereading notes and highlighting feel productive but produce weak results. A major review of learning techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed practice as the two highest-utility methods. In plain terms, quiz yourself often and spread your sessions across the week instead of cramming on Sunday.

Short daily sessions of 45 to 60 minutes beat one five-hour block. End each session with ten practice questions from earlier domains. This keeps older material fresh while you move forward.

Protect Your Study Time in November and December

Year-end brings work deadlines, holiday events, and travel. Put study blocks in your calendar now, the same way you book a meeting. Pick two fixed weekday slots and one weekend slot. When a week goes sideways, move the block instead of deleting it.

Tell one person about your exam date. A friend or manager who asks how your prep is going keeps you accountable through the busy weeks.

Get Structure If Self-Study Stalls

Self-study works for some learners and stalls for others. If you have restarted the same chapter three times, an instructor-led course gives you a fixed schedule, a live instructor for questions, and labs tied to the exam objectives. Ultimate IT Courses runs small-group classes for CompTIA, Microsoft, and cybersecurity certifications, with virtual options across Canada.

Your Next Step

Pick your certification this week, book the exam, and block your study time. If you want help choosing the right exam for your background and the weeks left in the year, book a training path consultation and we will map a realistic plan with you.
