IT Co-op Placements in Canada: A Guide for International Students

IT co-op placements in Canada for international students give you paid Canadian experience before you graduate. The rules changed in April 2026. This guide explains the current rules, where to find a placement, and how to prepare so you perform well from day one.

Want a plan built around your target role? Get a certification roadmap for Canadian IT careers and we will map your next steps.

What a Co-op Placement Gives You

Canadian employers ask for Canadian experience. A co-op placement answers this request. You work on real tickets, real systems, and real teams. You earn a reference from a Canadian supervisor. Many employers hire their co-op students after graduation.

A placement also tests your career choice. You learn whether you enjoy support work, networking, or security before you commit to a path.

The Rules Changed in April 2026

Until April 1, 2026, most students needed a separate co-op work permit. Post-secondary students no longer need one. You work under your study permit instead. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sets these conditions:

  • Your school confirms in a letter the placement is required for your program
  • You study full time in a post-secondary program
  • The placement totals 50 percent or less of your program

Your study permit must also include a condition allowing work. If it does not, you request an amendment at no fee. Read the IRCC page on student work placements and speak with your school’s international office. Rules change, so confirm them before you accept an offer.

Check Your Program First

Not every program includes a placement. Ask your school three questions. Is a placement part of my program? Who approves it? Who provides the letter for my study permit? Ask these questions before you enrol, not after.

Where IT Co-op Roles Exist

Typical roles include help desk technician, junior systems administrator, QA tester, network support assistant, and security operations intern. Employers include hospitals, universities, municipal governments, banks, and managed service providers.

Apply early. Many postings open four to six months before the work term starts. Start with your school’s co-op office. Then search the Government of Canada Job Bank and employer career pages.

Prepare Before You Apply

Hiring managers screen for basics. Show them you already know how a computer, a network, and a user account work.

Earn a foundation credential first. The CompTIA A+ certification suits help desk roles. Review our CompTIA training options to see how the courses fit your term schedule. If your target employer runs Microsoft 365, look at our Microsoft courses as well.

Build a small home lab. Install a virtual machine, set up a user directory, and write down each step. A short write-up proves your skills better than a list of tools.

Format your resume the Canadian way. Keep it to one page. Leave out your photo, birth date, and marital status. List results, such as tickets closed or systems documented.

Make the Placement Count

Treat each week as a build-up to your reference. Ask your supervisor for clear goals in week one. Track your tasks in a private notebook. Remove confidential details before you share any write-up.

Ask for a wider range of work as you gain trust. Shadow a senior teammate on one project. Offer to document a process the team repeats often. Documentation shows initiative and leaves something useful behind.

Request your reference in week ten, not on your last day.

Turn Your Co-op Into a Job Offer

Tell your supervisor you want a full-time role. Ask which skills the team hires for. Then use your remaining study terms to close those gaps. A certification chosen from real team needs carries more weight than one picked at random. Compare your options in our certifications catalogue.

Stay in touch after the term ends. Send a short update when you finish a course or earn a credential. Managers remember students who keep them informed.

Next Step

Pick one action this week. Ask your school about placement requirements, or book your first credential exam. Then build your plan from there.
