How to Get Your CCNA in 2026: What You Need to Know

CCNA certification 2026 — How to Get Your CCNA in 2026: What You Need to Know | photo by Field Engineer via Pexels

The CCNA is one of the most recognized networking certifications in the IT industry. If you work in networking, infrastructure, or IT support, this guide breaks down what the CCNA covers, who it is for, and how to prepare for it in 2026.

What Is the CCNA?

CCNA stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate. It is an entry-to-mid level certification from Cisco Systems. The CCNA validates your ability to install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot routed and switched networks.

The current exam is the 200-301 CCNA. Cisco consolidated all its associate-level tracks into one exam in 2020. This version of the exam is still active today.

You do not need a prerequisite certification to sit the exam. You do need solid working knowledge of networking fundamentals. Passing without hands-on experience is difficult.

What the CCNA Covers

The 200-301 exam spans six main domains: network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, IP services, security fundamentals, and automation and programmability.

Network fundamentals cover protocols, IP addressing, and the OSI model. IP connectivity covers routing protocols and static routing. Security fundamentals include access control lists and VPN basics. The automation section covers REST APIs and basic network programmability — Cisco added this area when the exam was refreshed.

If you trained for an older version of the CCNA, update your materials before preparing for the 200-301.

Who Should Pursue the CCNA?

The CCNA is a strong fit if you work in IT support or infrastructure and want to move into a dedicated networking role. It is also a practical step if you hold a systems administrator position and work with Cisco network equipment regularly.

For a complete career beginner with no IT background, the CCNA is not the best starting point. CompTIA Network+ covers a narrower scope at a more accessible level. Earning Network+ first gives you the foundation to approach CCNA preparation with greater confidence.

If you already work in a Cisco environment, the CCNA validates what you do on the job. It also meets the entry requirement for roles in government, telecom, and enterprise IT.

CCNA or CompTIA Network+: Which Should You Do First?

Network+ is vendor-neutral. The CCNA focuses on Cisco products and platforms. Both cover networking fundamentals, but the depth and scope differ.

If your workplace runs Cisco switches and routers, the CCNA is more directly applicable to your daily work. If you want a broad foundation before specializing, Network+ is a reasonable first step.

You do not need to earn both. Many professionals go straight to the CCNA when they are certain networking is their path.

How Long Does Preparation Take?

Preparation time depends on your current experience level.

Someone already working in IT with basic networking exposure typically needs three to six months of focused study. Someone coming from a non-networking IT role should allow six months or more.

The exam tests applied knowledge, not memorization. You need to practice IP subnetting, configure VLANs, and understand how routing protocols behave in practice — not only define them.

Hands-on labs are essential. Reading alone will not prepare you for the simulation questions on the exam.

What the Exam Looks Like

The 200-301 exam runs approximately 120 minutes. You will see between 85 and 100 questions. Question types include multiple choice, drag-and-drop, and simulation questions where you configure network devices inside the exam environment.

The passing score is 825 out of 1000. Simulation questions are where most candidates lose points. Time management matters — work through them methodically.

You book through Pearson VUE. Testing center and online options are both available in Canada.

What Jobs the CCNA Supports

The CCNA is relevant to roles including network technician, network administrator, junior network engineer, and systems administrator. In Canadian job postings, the CCNA appears as a preferred or required credential across government, telecom, financial services, and IT services sectors.

The Government of Canada Job Bank shows consistent demand for networking professionals in major cities. Organizations running Cisco infrastructure prefer candidates with validated Cisco knowledge.

The CCNA also positions you for the CCNP — Cisco Certified Network Professional. The CCNP is the next step for those who want to specialize in enterprise networking, security, or data center work.

How We Teach the CCNA

At Ultimate IT Courses, we deliver CCNA training as instructor-led courses in small groups. You work through the full 200-301 syllabus with an instructor focused on exam readiness and practical application.

Our networking training programs cover foundational and advanced topics. If you are not sure whether the CCNA is the right next step, we help you map your current background to the right certification path.

Get a personalized certification roadmap — we will recommend the most direct path based on your current role and goals.

Make a Decision and Start

The CCNA is a well-recognized credential across Canadian IT. It requires real preparation and hands-on practice to earn. If networking is your direction, the preparation is worth it.

Review what Cisco’s official CCNA page outlines for the 200-301 exam. Then check our Cisco training options and decide on your start date.
