AWS re/Start vs Self-Study: Which Path Works for Cloud Certifications

AWS re/Start vs self-study cloud certifications — AWS re/Start vs Self-Study: Which Path Works for Cloud Certifications | photo by SERHAT TURAN via Pexels

If you want to break into cloud computing, you have two main paths: a structured program like AWS re/Start, or self-directed study. Both lead to certifications. Both work. But they work for different types of people — and choosing wrong costs you time and money.

This article breaks down what each path actually involves, who each one suits, and how to decide which one fits your situation.

What Is AWS re/Start?

AWS re/Start is a free, full-time training program designed for people with little to no cloud experience. It runs for about 12 to 16 weeks and prepares you for the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam.

The program covers cloud fundamentals, Linux basics, networking, scripting, and security. Classes are delivered by authorized instructors in a structured schedule. You complete labs, assignments, and assessments throughout the cohort.

AWS re/Start targets people who are unemployed, underemployed, or changing careers. You do not need a technical background to apply. In Canada, the program runs through training partners approved by AWS, and seats are limited. If you want to explore your options for AWS training in Canada, the AWS training page at Ultimate IT Courses lists available programs.

What Does Self-Study for Cloud Certifications Look Like?

Self-study means you take responsibility for your own schedule, materials, and pace. You buy a course, read documentation, watch videos, run labs in a free-tier AWS account, and work through practice exams until you are ready.

For the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, most people spend four to eight weeks studying two to three hours per day. For the AWS Solutions Architect Associate, expect six to twelve weeks depending on your background and the depth of your preparation.

Self-study works well when you already know how to manage your time and stay accountable without external deadlines. It also works when you need flexibility — for instance, if you work full time while studying.

Key Differences Between the Two Paths

Structure: AWS re/Start gives you daily schedules, instructors, cohort peers, and regular check-ins. Self-study requires you to build your own structure. Some people thrive with structure. Others find it restrictive.

Cost: AWS re/Start is free. Self-study has costs: a video course, practice exams, and the certification exam itself. For the Cloud Practitioner exam, the exam fee is $150 USD. A course and practice tests add another $30 to $100 USD depending on what you buy.

Time commitment: AWS re/Start is full-time for three to four months. You cannot hold a full-time job at the same time. Self-study fits around your existing schedule if you manage it well.

Depth: AWS re/Start covers more than just the certification. You get hands-on labs, Linux, scripting, and career support. Self-study for Cloud Practitioner is narrower — you focus on what the exam covers.

Support: In re/Start, instructors and peers are available to help. In self-study, you solve problems on your own or through online communities.

Who Should Choose AWS re/Start?

AWS re/Start suits you if you have no cloud background and want a guided introduction, you are not currently working and have time for a full-time program, or you learn better in a classroom environment with instructors and accountability.

The program is especially strong for career changers who need hands-on exposure before they can confidently say they understand cloud fundamentals. According to the Government of Canada Job Bank, cloud-related IT roles are growing consistently — and having both training and a recognized credential behind you strengthens a job application.

Who Should Choose Self-Study?

Self-study suits you if you already have some IT background — networking, sysadmin, or help desk — and you work full time while needing to study at your own pace. It also suits people who are self-motivated and do not need an instructor to stay on track, or those who want to move faster than a structured cohort allows.

Self-study also makes sense when you are stacking certifications. If you pass Cloud Practitioner and then want AWS Solutions Architect Associate, you will likely continue with self-study anyway. Building that habit early is useful. You can explore the full range of AWS certifications available through Ultimate IT Courses to plan your next step after the first credential.

What the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Actually Covers

Both paths prepare you for the same exam. The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) tests your understanding of core AWS services, cloud economics and billing models, security and compliance basics in AWS, the AWS shared responsibility model, and cloud deployment and operations fundamentals.

The exam is 65 questions, multiple choice and multiple response, with a 90-minute time limit. A passing score is 700 out of 1000. It is an entry-level credential — it demonstrates awareness and fluency, not deep technical depth. According to the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner exam guide, the credential is designed for individuals in non-technical and technical roles looking to validate overall AWS Cloud knowledge.

If your goal is to move beyond Cloud Practitioner toward the Solutions Architect or SysOps Administrator tracks, you will need to commit to more structured study at some point. AWS re/Start prepares you for Cloud Practitioner specifically. Everything beyond that requires additional effort regardless of how you entered the field.

A Note on Cost vs. Outcome

Free programs are worth taking seriously, but free does not always mean better. AWS re/Start is genuinely useful training — it is not a shortcut. Graduates who complete it have the same credential as someone who self-studied.

What matters most is whether you actually finish and sit the exam. Many people start self-study and stall. Many others apply to structured programs, get accepted, and complete them because the external accountability keeps them going.

Be honest about which category you fall into. If you have started and stopped studying on your own more than once, a structured program is worth the time commitment.

How to Decide

Ask yourself three questions: Do I have time to commit to a full-time program for three to four months? Am I self-directed enough to hold myself accountable without scheduled deadlines? What do I want to do after Cloud Practitioner — and how quickly do I want to get there?

Your answers will point you toward one path. There is no wrong choice if you follow through.
