What Is the SC-300 Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator Certification

Identity is the new perimeter. Organizations are moving away from network-based security boundaries and placing more weight on managing who has access to what — and under what conditions. The SC-300: Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator certification validates your ability to design and manage that access layer in Microsoft 365 and Azure environments. If you work with Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, conditional access policies, or privileged identity management, this credential directly maps to your role.

This post explains what SC-300 covers, who it is designed for, how it compares to adjacent Microsoft certifications, and what you need to know before you start preparing.

What the SC-300 Certification Covers

The SC-300 exam is titled Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator. According to the official SC-300 certification page on Microsoft Learn, the exam tests your ability to implement, configure, and manage identity and access solutions using Microsoft Entra ID and related services.

The exam content breaks into four functional areas.

Implement identities in Microsoft Entra ID — This covers creating and configuring user and group accounts, managing external identities, and implementing hybrid identity using Azure AD Connect. If your organization runs both on-premises Active Directory and cloud services, this domain addresses how those environments connect and synchronize.

Implement authentication and access management — This is the conditional access domain. You configure access policies based on user risk, device compliance, and sign-in signals. Multi-factor authentication, password protection, and identity protection policies all fall here. This domain tests your ability to build access rules that allow legitimate users through while blocking suspicious access attempts.

Implement access management for applications — You manage how enterprise applications integrate with Entra ID. This includes registering applications, configuring app permissions and consent, implementing single sign-on, and managing service principals. Organizations running dozens of SaaS applications and internal tools need someone who understands this layer.

Plan and implement identity governance — This domain covers entitlement management, access reviews, and Privileged Identity Management. Privileged Identity Management, known as PIM, lets you manage just-in-time privileged access to Azure resources and Entra ID roles. Access reviews let you periodically verify that the right people still hold the right permissions.

Who Should Earn the SC-300

This certification targets IT professionals who own identity and access management as part of their role. The most relevant titles include systems administrator, cloud administrator, identity engineer, and security architect.

You should consider SC-300 if you manage Azure Active Directory or Microsoft Entra ID in your organization, your role involves configuring conditional access or MFA policies, you are responsible for onboarding users or overseeing privileged access, or you support a hybrid environment where on-premises Active Directory syncs to Azure.

If your work sits primarily in Microsoft 365 or Azure and access management is a significant part of what you do, SC-300 is the certification that formalizes those skills.

How SC-300 Relates to Other Microsoft Security Certifications

Microsoft’s security certification track includes several role-based credentials. Understanding how SC-300 fits helps you plan your path.

AZ-104: Microsoft Azure Administrator covers a broader range of Azure administration tasks including networking, storage, and compute. SC-300 goes deeper on identity specifically. Many Azure administrators hold or pursue SC-300 to strengthen their identity skills alongside general administration credentials.

SC-200: Microsoft Security Operations Analyst focuses on threat detection and response using Microsoft Sentinel, Defender XDR, and related tools. SC-200 and SC-300 cover different layers of the same security ecosystem — one handles operations, the other handles identity. Senior security professionals often hold both.

SC-100: Microsoft Cybersecurity Architect is the advanced-level credential for security architects. SC-300 is frequently listed as a recommended step before SC-100 because identity governance is a core element of enterprise security architecture.

The Microsoft Cybersecurity Reference Architecture documentation shows how identity sits at the center of Microsoft’s Zero Trust model. Earning SC-300 gives you the skills that sit at the foundation of that architecture.

Preparing for the SC-300 Exam

The SC-300 exam is practical. It tests scenario-based knowledge — not just definitions. You need to understand how policies interact with each other, what happens when conditional access blocks a user, and how PIM assignments work in a real tenant.

Entra ID configuration is non-negotiable. You should be comfortable creating users, groups, and dynamic membership rules. You need to understand B2B and B2C identity, guest access, and how external collaboration policies work.

Conditional access policy design is where many candidates underestimate the complexity. Policies have named locations, device compliance conditions, risk levels, and grant controls. Working through real scenarios in a test tenant gives you the pattern recognition you need on exam day.

PIM configuration requires hands-on practice. Understanding the difference between eligible assignments, active assignments, and time-bound access — and knowing how approval workflows function — is the kind of detail the exam probes.

Structured instructor-led training covers all exam domains with labs, giving you a faster path than self-study alone. Browse Microsoft certification training at Ultimate IT Courses to see what program options are available.

Where SC-300 Fits in a Microsoft Career Path

After SC-300, the natural progression depends on your focus. Security-focused professionals move toward SC-200 and ultimately SC-100. Cloud administrators often pair SC-300 with AZ-500 (Azure Security Engineer Associate) to build a complete cloud security credential set.

Demand for identity and access management skills is strong. Identity-related attacks — credential theft, privilege escalation, account compromise — remain among the most common vectors against Microsoft 365 environments, according to Canadian Centre for Cyber Security guidance on protecting cloud environments. Organizations need professionals who understand not only how to configure identity tools, but how to design policies that reduce the attack surface.

SC-300 positions you as someone who owns that layer of the organization’s security posture.
