Microsoft Intune for IT Administrators: What You Need to Know

Microsoft Intune is the device management platform at the center of modern Microsoft 365 environments. If you administer Windows endpoints, manage company devices, or work in a cloud-first IT environment, you need to understand what Intune does and how it fits into your organization’s security model.

What Is Microsoft Intune

Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based endpoint management platform. It gives IT administrators a single console for enrolling devices, enforcing security policies, deploying applications, and monitoring compliance — across Windows PCs, iOS, Android, and macOS devices.

Intune is part of the Microsoft Intune Suite, and it integrates directly with Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory), Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, and the Microsoft 365 compliance center. If your organization runs Microsoft 365, you likely already have access to Intune through your existing licensing.

Who Needs Intune Training

IT administrators managing endpoint devices are the primary audience for Intune training. This includes systems administrators, IT support engineers moving into endpoint management roles, and Microsoft 365 administrators who want to expand their skill set.

Intune knowledge is also relevant to cybersecurity teams. Conditional access policies — one of Intune’s core features — let you block non-compliant devices from accessing company data. This makes Intune part of your organization’s security posture, not only a device management tool.

The Government of Canada Job Bank shows steady demand for IT administrators with cloud endpoint management skills across industries. Employers listing Microsoft 365 administration and endpoint management in job postings expect Intune familiarity at the intermediate and senior administrator level.

If you want to build these skills with structured training, explore our Microsoft training programs at Ultimate IT Courses.

What Intune Lets You Do

Intune covers four main areas of endpoint management.

Device enrollment gets company-owned and personal devices into management. Intune supports Windows Autopilot for zero-touch deployment, automated Apple DEP enrollment for iOS and macOS, and Android Enterprise enrollment for Android devices.

Configuration profiles push settings to devices without manual intervention. You set password requirements, encryption, Wi-Fi profiles, VPN configurations, and hundreds of other policy options from the Intune admin center — and those settings apply automatically to enrolled devices.

Compliance policies define what “compliant” means in your environment. Devices missing the required OS version, lacking encryption, or failing other checks get flagged. You then use conditional access rules to block flagged devices from company resources until they meet your standards.

Application management covers deploying, updating, and removing software on managed devices. Intune also supports app protection policies for personal devices — letting you protect company data in apps like Outlook or Teams without enrolling the device itself.

The MD-102 Endpoint Administrator Certification

The Microsoft MD-102 Endpoint Administrator certification is the recognized credential for IT professionals managing endpoints with Microsoft tools. The exam covers Intune device management, Windows Autopilot, endpoint security, and co-management with Microsoft Configuration Manager.

Microsoft’s MD-102 certification page lists the full skills outline and exam structure. If you work in endpoint management and want a credential employers recognize, MD-102 is the right target.

Our Microsoft training programs at Ultimate IT Courses cover the Microsoft 365 administrator skill set, including endpoint management. Instructor-led training with small class sizes gives you direct access to qualified instructors and hands-on lab time.

Intune and Co-Management With Configuration Manager

Many organizations still run Microsoft Configuration Manager (formerly SCCM) alongside Intune. Microsoft supports co-management, which lets you manage devices with both tools simultaneously during a phased cloud migration.

If you have Configuration Manager experience, Intune is a natural skill extension. The concepts transfer — policy-based management, software deployment, compliance reporting — but Intune brings them into a cloud-native interface without the on-premises infrastructure overhead.

For organizations moving from fully on-premises management to a hybrid or cloud-first model, co-management is the recommended path. Intune training gives you the knowledge to plan and execute this transition confidently.

How to Start With Intune

A foundational understanding of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID gives you a solid starting point for Intune training. From there, lab access is the fastest way to build real skill — Intune requires hands-on configuration practice to retain.

Structured instructor-led training delivers Intune content in a logical sequence, from enrollment to compliance to application management. It also gives you a qualified instructor to answer questions specific to your environment and your certification goals.

If you are building toward MD-102 or want a structured path through Microsoft endpoint management, explore our Microsoft courses at Ultimate IT Courses. Ready to map out the right path for your career? Get a personalized certification roadmap from our team.
