VMware vs Hyper-V: Which Virtualization Platform to Learn

Broadcom rewrote VMware licensing after acquiring the company, moving every customer from a perpetual per-CPU model to a subscription priced per core, with a minimum of 16 core licenses on every processor. Many IT teams responded by shifting new workloads onto Microsoft Hyper-V instead of renewing VMware contracts at the new price. If you administer virtual infrastructure, the VMware vs Hyper-V decision now shapes your training plan and your résumé, not only your employer’s budget.

Explore advanced certification programs built around the platform your infrastructure runs.

Why the Decision Changed

Under the old VMware licensing model, you bought a perpetual license per physical CPU and renewed support separately. Under Broadcom’s current licensing model, every VMware Cloud Foundation and vSphere Foundation deployment runs on a per-core subscription, and Broadcom counts a minimum of 16 core licenses per processor even on chips built with fewer physical cores. Renewal costs rose sharply for many organizations, and some now run a mixed environment: legacy workloads stay on VMware while new clusters get built on Hyper-V to control cost. Administrators who know both platforms hold an advantage over specialists in only one.

What Each Platform Asks You to Learn

VMware vSphere still leads on advanced enterprise features: vMotion live migration, Distributed Resource Scheduler for automatic workload balancing, and a mature ecosystem of third-party backup and monitoring tools built around it for two decades. Learning vSphere means working through vCenter Server, host clustering, storage policies, and network virtualization with NSX.

Hyper-V ships as a built-in role inside Windows Server rather than a standalone product. Learning it means learning Windows Server administration alongside it: Active Directory, storage spaces, failover clustering, and Windows Admin Center. If your organization already runs a Windows-heavy estate, Hyper-V skills overlap directly with work you likely already do day to day.

Certification Paths Compared

VMware’s certification path runs through the VCP-DCV credential. The current qualifying exam is 2V0-21.23, built on vSphere 8.x, and Broadcom removed the mandatory authorized-training prerequisite in 2024. You now earn the VCP-DCV certification by passing the exam alone.

Microsoft’s equivalent path is the Windows Server Hybrid Administrator Associate certification, earned by passing two exams: AZ-800 and AZ-801. AZ-800 covers core infrastructure administration, including Hyper-V, Active Directory, and hybrid networking with Azure. AZ-801 covers advanced services such as disaster recovery, high availability, and security hardening. Neither exam carries a prerequisite.

Which One to Learn First

Base your decision on the infrastructure in front of you, not on which platform sounds more advanced on paper.

– Windows Server environment already in place: start with Hyper-V and the AZ-800/AZ-801 path. You build directly on skills you use daily.
– vSphere-standardized environment, or client work across mixed enterprise data centers: VCP-DCV keeps your résumé relevant for virtualization-heavy infrastructure roles.
– Mixed environment, or a migration project on the horizon: study both. Migration work rewards administrators who speak both platforms fluently.

Government of Canada Job Bank data shows steady, balanced demand for network and systems administrators across the country, and virtualization skills show up in most infrastructure postings alongside Windows Server and networking experience. Neither platform is disappearing, and the administrators with the most options are the ones qualified no matter which hypervisor a posting names.

Build the Skills Employers Are Listing

Ultimate IT Courses runs instructor-led VMware training built around live lab environments, alongside Microsoft-authorized training covering Windows Server administration and the AZ-800/AZ-801 exam objectives directly. Both paths fit into small-group or corporate team formats if you are upskilling alongside a wider infrastructure team.
