Git and GitHub Basics for Early IT Professionals: Version Control Skills to Learn

Git and GitHub basics for IT professionals — Git and GitHub Basics for Early IT Professionals: Version Control Skills to Learn | photo by Rafael Minguet Delgado via Pexels

Git and GitHub basics for IT professionals start with one idea: every change you make is saved, tracked, and reversible. If you write scripts, edit configuration files, or manage infrastructure, you need this skill. This guide shows what to learn first and how to practise it.

Ready to plan your next step? Get a personalized certification roadmap built around your current role.

Why Early IT Professionals Need Version Control

Years ago, version control belonged to software developers. Today it belongs to everyone in IT. Administrators store PowerShell scripts in repositories. Cloud engineers keep infrastructure templates in repositories. Security teams track policy files the same way.

Without version control, you rename files like final_v2_REAL.ps1 and hope nobody overwrites them. With Git, you see who changed a file, when, and why. You roll back a bad change in seconds.

Hiring managers notice this skill. Browse postings on Job Bank and count how many list Git next to cloud, Linux, or automation duties.

Git and GitHub Are Not the Same Thing

Git is the tool. It runs on your own computer and tracks changes to files in a folder. GitHub is a website where you store a copy of your Git project online. Teams use it to share work and review each other’s changes.

Other services work the same way, including GitLab and Azure DevOps. Learn Git first. The hosting service matters less.

The Commands You Use Every Day

Git has hundreds of options. You need a handful. Learn these first:

  • git init, git clone, and git status to start a project and see where you stand
  • git add and git commit to save a snapshot with a short message
  • git push and git pull to share your work and fetch your teammates’ work

Practise this loop until it feels automatic. Change a file. Check the status. Add it. Commit it. Push it.

Write clear commit messages. “Fix DNS script timeout” helps your team. “Update stuff” does not. Your future self will thank you.

Branches Keep Your Work Safe

A branch is a separate line of work. You create one, make your changes, and test them without touching the main copy. When you are happy, you merge the branch back.

This habit protects production systems. Nobody edits the live configuration directly. Everyone proposes a change on a branch and waits for review.

On GitHub, this review step is called a pull request. A teammate reads your changes, leaves comments, and approves the merge. The GitHub Hello World guide walks you through your first branch and pull request in about ten minutes.

Handle Merge Conflicts Calmly

Two people edit the same line. Git asks you to choose. This is a merge conflict, and it is normal.

Open the file. Read both versions. Keep the correct lines and remove the markers Git added. Then commit the result. Conflicts feel stressful at first, yet they become routine after a few practice rounds.

Keep Secrets Out of Your Repository

This rule protects your employer. Never commit passwords, API keys, or certificates to a repository. Public repositories get scanned by attackers within minutes. Private ones leak too.

Use a .gitignore file to exclude sensitive files. Store secrets in a vault service instead. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security offers guidance on protecting credentials for organizations of all sizes.

Where Git Fits in Your Certification Path

Git shows up across several certification tracks. Microsoft’s DevOps Engineer exam covers source control and pull request workflows. Red Hat automation courses rely on repositories to store Ansible playbooks. AWS and Azure infrastructure training both assume you version your templates.

Review the Microsoft training options if you lean toward Azure DevOps. Look at the Red Hat courses if Linux automation is your goal. For programming fundamentals, see the programming training page.

A Four-Week Practice Plan

Week one: install Git, create a GitHub account, and make your first repository. Commit a README file.

Week two: move your existing scripts into a repository. Commit each one with a clear message.

Week three: work on branches. Open a pull request against your own repository and merge it.

Week four: fork a small public project, fix a typo in its documentation, and submit a pull request. Real contributions build confidence fast.

Keep a log of what you learn. A tidy GitHub profile with real scripts gives employers something to look at. We do not promise a job or a salary, but a visible portfolio supports your application.

Choose Your Next Step

Version control is a small skill with a large payoff. Start with the daily loop, add branches, then add pull requests. Pair the habit with a certification aligned to your target role.
